Set in a stunning location on Wells Cathedral Green, facing the West Front, the Ancient Gatehouse is well-positioned for discovering Somerset’s historic beauty spots.
Just yards away from the ancient market place, the hotel reflects authentic period charm with its centuries-old spiral stone staircase and quaint little passages.
As well as being a hotel; the Ancient Gatehouse also boasts The excellent Rugantino Restaurant, specialising in authentic Italian cuisine, with a welcoming ambiance.
Rugantinos has been serving the best Italian cuisine since 1974. A true Italian experience started by Franco Rossi who hails from Assisi in Umbria (known as the green heart of Italy due to its central location east of Tuscany and its abundance of green hills) and now run by his two sons Jon & Nick.
The Rooms have been refurbished to a very high standard and retain their original features and character. Some rooms have a four-poster bed.
Rugantino Family run Italian restaurant was first established in 1974 by Franco and Heather Rossi. We specialise in authentic Italian cuisine and are passionately influenced from the region of Umbria where Franco originates.
Quality food and service is at the heart of what we do, with a fabulous menu and wonderful extensive wine list to compliment the food, in a warm, relaxed and cosy environment.
